CHAPTER 36

It was later that afternoon when Adam and Eve rode their horses along with Plon, Janno, and two of the male servants, Molk and Sill, to the edge of the mesa overlooking the amphitheater. They looked down onto the grassy stade and saw the tribes gathering together along the sloping hillside. Adam and Eve marveled again at the scene. The tribes were dressed once more in their finest regalia, talking, jesting, and clowning, entirely unaware that they were watching them.

As the tribespeople settled into position, taking their seats along the sloping wall of the amphitheater, Adam gave instructions to Sill and Molk. “I want you to take the supply horses down to the central mound and carefully unpack them. Leave the spears and the sacks at the base of the mound and set up the target we made over there.” He pointed in the direction of the orchard.

The servants nodded and urged their horses forward, taking the trail that descended into the amphitheater.

“Do you have everything you need?” queried Janno, pulling alongside Adam.

“I believe so,” answered the Delii leader, “but I’d like you to remain while I address the tribespeople. In case I need any help. Perhaps you could translate for those who speak in sign.”

“Certainly,” said Janno.

Adam prodded his horse in the side and the group made for the trail Molk and Sill had taken. In single file they descended the well trodden path meandering through the trees toward the basin floor. Halfway down they came into view of the tribes, and Adam was suddenly taken with the respectful silence that befell the tribespeople. Everything became deathly quiet—even Eve noted it. He glanced back at her. For some reason he thought that after being here almost an entire week, the tribespeople would be a bit more relaxed and at ease with them, but perhaps this was too much to expect.

At the bottom of the amphitheater, the foursome crossed the grassy flat that led to the mound where they dismounted. While Plon and Janno took the horses away, Adam and Eve prepared for the demonstration they were about to give. Opening the sacks stuffed with hay, the two pulled out the clay plates hidden within. They stacked them carefully on the grass. Next to the plates they laid out the spears and river stones. Satisfied that all was ready, Adam climbed the mound. Reaching the top he turned and studied the tribespeople who sat some two hundred metrons away. Once again they were segregated into their different tribal denominations and waiting silently for him to speak. He raised his hand in the traditional kalata greeting.

“Tribes of Terran!” he called out loudly, his voice rolling across the grass. “Today marks the sixth day since our arrival upon this planet and this wonderful garden you call Eden. It is a magnificent place and Eve and I are swept away by the opportunity given to us, and we are delighted that we might share in this world’s bounty with you. For all
